Ann Arbor Y.M.C.A.

Alsons Screen   May 2008 to November 2008 | Customer Service Representative

This was another position that required a high level of customer service as well as retail expertise. I worked at a local YMCA, selling memberships and providing account service to members. At the base level I managed accounts by creating new ones, merging family accounts, and canceling others. But the part of this job that challenged me was selling the memberships. To newcomers I gave tours, answered questions, and provided competitive pricing and service information to highlight our strong points.

Beyond the function of a gym, the YMCA also sponsored many non-profit events to help children, local churches, and families of those serving the country. I helped organize events, promote fundraisers, and brainstorm new ideas to better serve our members.

Jim Casey Foundation

Alsons Screen   2004 to 2008 | Speaker, Promoter & Advocate

One of my biggest passions is to help children in foster care. The Jim Casey Foundation is a large organization which helps foster children transition out of foster care and into independence. Because many of these children come from abusive biological homes, and dysfunctional foster homes, I spent four years volunteering to help improve their quality of living.

Because many foster children are unaware of their opportunities in life for obtaining a college education, achieving their dream careers, and having a safe and secure home, I worked with local social services to do many speaking engagements on providing information regarding available choices.

I also created pamphlets and brochures, as well as planned parties and events for younger foster children to attend. By combining both educational and fun events, I was a strong advocate for supporting foster children as they transition out of care, and also making life a little easier for those who had still had many years before becoming independent.

Lastly, I spoke at many foster parent training sessions to help both sides understand each other, as well as to minimize future conflicts. Many foster children and parents alike have difficulty understanding each other, and the lack of empathy and knowledge often leads to impairing a child’s emotional development. By working with the children and parents, and addressing the weaknesses of the social system, I tried to bring light to many of the misunderstandings which occur.
